Area football roundup from Friday, September 9th

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics football team played host to the Spring Grove Lions in their home opener for the 2022 season in Lyle Friday evening, and it was the Lions bolting out to a 35-6 lead at the half and rolling up 415 yards of total offense in a 48-20 win.

LP Quarterback Jake Truckenmiller was 6 for 13 passing for 83 yards and a touchdown for the game, and he also led the Athletics defensively with eight solo tackles.  Trey Anderson had a strong game running the football for LP with 18 carries for 81 yards and touchdown runs of 9 and 5 yards, and he was also the team’s leading receiver with four catches for 44 yards.

Lyle/Pacelli is now 0-2 on the young season, and the Athletics return to action next Saturday afternoon at home versus Cedar Mountain, with kickoff at 3:00 p.m.

The Southland Rebels were on the road for the first time this season at Lanesboro Friday night, and Burros running back Orion Sass carried the ball 27 times for 248 yards and two touchdowns to help lead Lanesboro to a 30-14 win.

The Burros broke the game open with 16 unanswered points in the third quarter to erase a 14-6 Rebels lead at the half.  Southland returns to action next Friday night in Spring Valley versus Kingsland, with kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Defending State Class 9-Man champion LeRoy/Ostrander was looking to move to 2-0 on the season in their home opener in LeRoy Friday evening versus Mabel/Canton, but it was the Cougars kicking their running game into high gear with two running back each gaining over 100 yards, and they piled up 373 rushing yards as a team on their way to a 46-30 win.

The 1-1 Cardinals will host Lanesboro in a rematch of last season’s Section 1 9-Man championship game next Friday night, with kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
