Austin man in custody after arrest warrant served at Southwest Austin residence Tuesday

An Austin man was taken into custody after officers with the Austin Police Department and its Special Incident Response Team (SIRT) responded to a residence in southwest Austin Tuesday afternoon.

Officers from the Austin Police Department responded to a reported assault in the 300 block of 2nd St. SW at approximately 1:51 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Officers met with a female who told them that she had been assaulted, and Chief of Police Dave McKichan stated in a report that the victim alleged that the female who assaulted her had gone into a residence at 310 2nd St. SW. The victim stated that 29-year old Terrance Gustaf Book of Austin was also in the residence, had stolen some of her property previously, and may have weapons in the residence. Chief McKichan stated that Book did have outstanding warrants for his arrest, including for a robbery involving a firearm.

Officers were able to communicate with those in the residence and all but Book exited. The Austin Mower Special Incident Response Team (SIRT) was activated due to the risk assessed to officers and deputies attempting to serve the arrest warrants. A search warrant was also secured, and McKichan stated that multiple attempts were made, and time given, in order to make contact with Book.  When those were unsuccessful, he went on to state that members of the SIRT team then entered residence. Book was ultimately located hiding in the attic, was taken into custody, and placed in the Mower County jail.

Chief McKichan indicated that ammunition and two firearms were located in the residence. One of the guns had been reported stolen, and McKichan added that it also appeared that particular weapon had been modified in order to work with a homemade silencer that was also seized.

In addition to Book’s arrest on the existing warrants, Chief McKichan stated that a report will be forwarded to the Mower County Attorney’s Office in consideration of any new charges.  Book is being held in the Mower County jail on felony charges of 1st degree burglary and 1st degree aggravated robbery, plus also on a misdemeanor charge of domestic abuse, violate an order for protection.

A court date for Book is pending,
