Austin man in custody after reported burglary Sunday morning

An Austin man is in custody after a reported burglary Sunday morning involving several items in two vehicles in a garage at a residence in the northwestern section of the city.

Austin Police took the report of a burglary Sunday morning from a residence in the 600 block of 19th St. NW. The homeowner reported finding that their vehicles,which were inside their garage had been gone through during the evening. They reported that money, ammunition and a .380 handgun had been stolen. Chief of Police Dave McKichan reported that a neighbor’s camera system captured a subject attempting to steal a package off of their porce, but returned it. McKichan stated that officers and Mower County Sheriff’s Deputies were able to make an identification based on the surveillance video, and the Austin Police Department, assisted by the Mower County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on the morning of Monday, September 20th at a residence in the 500 block of 18th St. NW. Chief McKichan stated that the stolen handgun and ammunition were recovered at that address.

18-year old Elias James Wells of Austin was taken into custody, and he was transported to the Mower County jail on a probable cause arrest related to the case, which will be sent for charging review to the Mower County Attorney’s Office.
