Austin murder suspect being held in Mower County jail on $1 million bond

The main suspect in a murder in Austin in early June who was recently taken into custody at a residence in Sioux Falls, South Dakota has been extradited back to Mower County, and he is being held in the Mower County jail on $1 million bond.

18-year old Miguel Nunez Jr. was booked into the jail Thursday afternoon, and he has been charged with a felony 2nd degree murder, and two counts of felony 2nd degree murder, without intent, while committing a felony.  Nunez Jr. was located on the evening of Thursday, July 9th in the attic of a residence in Sioux Falls, and was taken into custody without incident.  He was wanted on the second-degree murder charge for the shooting death of 45-year-old David Harris in Austin on June 5th.

Court documents stated that Nunez Jr. went to a residence in the 100 block of 12th St. NE in Austin early on the morning of June 5th with three other juveniles to purchase marijuana.  Once inside, Nunez threatened to shoot everyone in the residence if he was not given all of the drugs.  Court documents went on to state that at that point, Harris heard the commotion in the other bedroom, grabbed his gun and opened the door.

That’s when Nunez allegedly shot Harris in the chest three times. A second victim then struggled with Nunez and was also shot.  Authorities stated that Nunez, Jr. himself was also shot during the incident and dropped his weapon on the way out of the residence.

Nunez Jr.’s next appearance in Mower County District Court is scheduled for July 29th.
