Austin Packers baseball splits doubleheader with Red Wing Saturday

The Austin Packers baseball team traveled to Red Wing Saturday for a Big 9 Conference doubleheader with the Wingers, and the Packers earned a split of the twin bill, losing game one 7-2 before rebounding to take the second game 9-6.

In the first game, Red Wing scored seven runs on 14 hits, they did not commit an error and left six on base, while Austin tallied two runs on five hits, they committed two errors and left seven men on base.  Bray Klapperick and Logan Murphy knocked in the two Packer runs in the game, while Murphy, Teyghan Hovland, Jordan Ransom, Dakota Retterath and Nic Robertson all supplied one hit apiece.  Brady Kominek got the start on the mound in game one of the doubleheader for Austin and gave up the six Red Wing runs on 11 hits, with five of those runs earned.  He struck out two, and did not walk a batter.

In game two, Klapperick and Teyghan Hovland each belted out three hits and knocked in five of Austin’s nine runs in the game as the Packers rallied back to take the second game 9-6.

Austin tallied nine runs on 15 hits, they committed two errors and left 10 men on base while Red Wing totaled six runs on five hits, they also committed two errors and left five on base.  Klapperick wound up 3 for 4 for the Packers with two RBI’s and a run scored, Hovland was 3 for 5 with three RBI’s, Nic Robertson, Cal Fox and Bryce Fisher each tallied two hits, with Robertson knocking in a run and scoring another and Fisher scoring two runs, while Jared Lillemon, RJ Wiesler and Ian Bundy all adding a hit apiece.  Robertson came in in relief of starter Brayden Bishop in the third inning and pitched the last 4 and 2/3rds of an inning for the win, giving up an earned run on two hits, striking out four and walking one.

Austin is now 2-3 on the season, and the Packers are back on the road Tuesday at Darrts Park in Owatonna for a Big 9 matchup with the Huskies, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m.
