Austin Packers baseball team splits doubleheader with Red Wing Tuesday
The Austin Packers baseball team took to the road to A.P. Anderson Park in Red Wing Tuesday in looking to get back on the winning track in a doubleheader versus the Wingers, and in Game 1, a six-run top of the third inning helped to lead to an 11-5 Austin win, and in Game 2, Wingers pitcher Logan Norquist threw a three-hit shutout in a 7-0 Red Wing victory.
In Game 1, the Packers jumped out to an 8-0 lead with one in the top of the first, one in the second and six in the third. Red Wing cut the Austin lead to 8-3 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Packers answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth for a 10-3 lead. The Wingers pushed across single runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 10-5, but they would get no closer as Austin tallied a single run in the top of the seventh in the win.
Offensively for Austin, Brayden Bishop helped to lead the way by going 3 for 4 with a double, two RBI’s and a run scored, catcher Sam Winkels also went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Dakota Retterath was 2 for 3 with two doubles, three RBI’s and a run scored, Isaac Osgood went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored, Nick Robertson was 1 for 4 with two runs knocked in, two more scored and a stolen base, Ethan Anderson picked up two hits in five trips to the plate with a stolen base, Isaac Stromlund was 1 for 4 with a run scored, and Sam Oelfke went 1 for 1 with a run scored.
Brayden Bishop pitched the first 3 and 1/3rds of an inning for Austin and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits, striking out four and walking five, and Sam Oelfke then came in with one out in the bottom of the fourth and pitched the final 3 and 2/3rds of an inning for the win, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits, striking out one and walking two.
In Game 2, the Packers could manage only three hits off of Red Wing starter Logan Norquist, who struck out four and walked two in seven innings of work. The Wingers would score the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the second, and they padded their lead with three more runs in the third, and three more in the fourth to account for the 7-0 final.
Nick Robertson belted out two of Austin’s three hits in the game, one of them a double in three trips to the plate, and Peyton Ransom had a double in two trips to the plate for Austin’s other hit in the contest.
With the doubleheader split, the Packers are now 8-11 overall on the season, and Austin will wrap up the regular season at Dick Seltz Field versus Rochester John Marshall in a Big 9 Conference matchup Thursday, with first pitch at 5 p.m. Austin will then take on an opponent yet to be determined in the quarterfinals of the Section 1AAA tournament Saturday.
