Austin Packers boys’ tennis downs Faribault, falls to Owatonna in Big 9 triangular Saturday

The Austin Packers boys’ tennis team was on the road at the Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center Saturday for a Big 9 Conference triangular with the host Huskies and Faribault, and in their first match, the Packers nipped the Falcons by a 4-3 score, then fell to a talented Owatonna team 7-0.

In their victory over Faribault, the Packers took three of the four singles matches as Joey Schammel continued his winning ways so far this season at first singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Faribault’s Brandon Petricka, Cole Hebrink fell in the first set to Carsen Kramer of the Falcons at second singles 4-6, but he rallied back to earn a three-set win by taking the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-1, and Owen Carroll of Austin swept Miles Leopold of Faribault in straight sets at fourth singles 6-0, 6-4.  The Packers earned the fourth point of the match at third doubles when Micah Peterson and Laython Stenzel earned their first varsity win by downing Colin Haefs and Adam Diaz-Coons of the Falcons in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Austin then took on a very tough Owatonna squad that won by the score of 7-0, but Head Coach Jeff Anderson noted that the final score was a bit deceiving in the fact that many matches were more competitive than the final scores showed.

The Packers return to action on Tuesday at the Rochester Outdoor Tennis Center versus the Century Panthers in a Big 9 Conference match, with the action set to start at 4:30.
