Austin Packers girls basketball falls to Kasson/Mantorville 72-64 in season opener Tuesday night

The Austin Packers girls basketball team, consolation champions in Class AAA last sesaon entertained Section 1AAA rival Kasson/Mantorville in the season opener for both squads at Ove Berven Gym Tuesday evening, and it was the Komets’ Aby Shubert, who has committed to play next year at Division I Xavier tallying a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to help the Komets move out in front in the second half on their way to a 72-64 win.

The Packers, who led 29-26 at the half were led by senior Olivia Walsh who tallied 21 points, six rebounds and one assist, guard Ajiem Agwa contributed 16 points and three rebounds, senior Cassidy Shute tallied a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, plus she also added three assists and three steals, Marissa Shute totaled five points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal, Mackenzie Brede and Kristen Neilsen each scored four points apiece for their first varsity points, plus Neilsen added five rebounds and one assist, Quinn Osgood tallied three points, her first at the varsity level for Austin, plus she pulled in two rebounds, guard Marie Tolbert added four rebounds, three assists and one steal, and Nora Sand pulled in one rebound for the Packers Tuesday evening.

With the loss, Austin opens the season with a record of 0-1, and the Packers will kick off the Big 9 portion of their schedule Friday night in Rochester versus the John Marshall Rockets, with the varsity tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
