Austin Packers girls’ hockey downs Waseca 4-1 Tuesday evening

The Austin Packers girls’ hockey team was looking for their second win in a row at Riverside Arena Tuesday evening versus Section 1A rival Waseca, and Sara Wangen and Izzy Heman each scored twice to help lead the Packers past the Bluejays 4-1.

After a scoreless first period, Wangen scored the first goal of the game at 7:23 of the second period, with assists to Camille Dunlap and Maci Talamantes, but the Bluejays’ Madalyn Benson tied the game at 1 with an even-strength goal at 11:45.  Wangen scored what turned out to be the eventual game-winner at 15:45 of the period with an assist to Kate Holtz, and Heman then tallied only :32 into the third period, with assists to Megan Schultz and Holtz, and her short-handed goal at 6:21 of the period with another assist from Schultz accounted for the 4-1 final.

Each team was penalized three times for six minutes, and Austin peppered the Bluejay net with 50 shots, with goaltender Illamay Draheim making 46 saves in a busy night.  Packer goalie Kyia Radford-Garcia kicked out 15 of the 16 shots she faced in earning the win between the pipes.

With the win, Austin moves to 5-6 overall on the season, and they return to action Thursday night back at Riverside Arena versus Big 9 Conference foe Rochester Mayo, with face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
