Austin Packers girls’ hockey falls to Albert Lea in home opener Tuesday evening 3-2

The Austin Packers girls’ hockey team was looking to keep their record unblemished Tuesday evening in their home opener for the 2021-2022 season against Big 9 Conference rival Albert Lea, but it was 7th grader Morgan Goskeson tallying a hat trick, including the eventual game-winning goal on the power play at 13:37 of the 3rd period for the Tigers in a 3-2 win.

Goskeson scored the only goal of the 1st period at 5:34 to put the Tigers in the lead 1-0, but the Packers tied the game on a short-handed goal from Sara Wangen, with an assist to Kate Holtz at 2:47 of the 2nd period to knot the game at 1.  Goskeson put the Tigers back in the lead with an even-strength goal at 14:13 of the period to make the score 2-1, but Austin tied the game at 2 only eight second later when Wangen tallied her second goal of the game at 14:21 with assists to Kate Holtz and Cassidy Davidson.

Austin was 0 for 1 on the power play, while Albert Lea was 1 for 4, and each team tallied 30 shots on goal in the game.  Kyia Radford-Garcia turned away 27 shots for the Packers, while Jayda Moyer made 28 saves for the Tigers in earning the win between the pipes.

With the loss, Austin is now 2-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Big 9 Conference.   The Packers are back in action next Tuesday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato against the East Cougars, with face-off at 5:15 p.m.  The next game back at Riverside Arena for Austin will be on Thursday, December 2nd against Northfield.
