The Austin Packers girls hockey team was looking to get back on the winning track Saturday as they played host to the Panthers of Rochester Century/John Marshall at Riverside Arena, but it was Century/JM’s Fiona Barry scoring a pair of power play goals as the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead on their way to a 5-2 win.
The Packers got on the board at 10:38 of the third period when Peyton Squire scored her second goal of the season on the power play, with an assist to Camille Dunlap, her fourth of the year to cut the Panthers lead to 4-1, and freshman Lauren Bowe lit the lamp for the fourth time this season with only :39 seconds left, with an assist from Squire, her fourth, to account for the 5-2 final.
The Panthers outshot the Packers 55-28 for the game, with Austin goaltender Chloe Schaal turning away 50 shots, while Century/JM’s Isabella Scranton made 26 saves to earn the win in net. The Packers were whistled for seven penalties in the contest for 14 minutes, while the Panthers were called for three penalties for six minutes, and Austin was 1 for 3 on the power play, while Century/JM was 2 for 7.
With the loss, the Packers are now 1-13 overall on the season and 0-8 in the Big 9 Conference. Austin returns to action Thursday night in Winona versus the Winhawks, with puck drop at 7:15 pm that evening.
