Austin Packers girls tennis team downed by Rochester Century 6-1 in Section 1AA team tournament
The Austin Packers girls tennis team, the No. 13 seed in the Section 1AA team tournament traveled to Rochester Tuesday to take on the No. 4 seeded Panthers, and it was Century advancing into the quarterfinals with a 6-1 win.
The win for the Packers Tuesday was provided by Gracie Schmitt at No. 1 singles, as she downed Zoe Zhang of Century in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Abby and Katy VanPelt for Austin at No. 1 doubles battled the team of Sara Nevenheim and Sara Yilma of the Panthers for three sets, but the Panther duo was victorious by a score of 2-6, 6-1 and 10-5.
The Section 1AA individual tennis tournament will be next for the Packers, with play scheduled to start on Thursday, October 12th. Century advances to play Thursday against No. 5 seed Stewartville, who swept 12th seeded Northfield Tuesday 7-0. Also advancing on Tuesday was eighth-seeded Red Wing, as they downed No. 9 seed Faribault 5-2. The Wingers will have to play No. 1 seed and No. 1 ranked Rochester Mayo in Rochester Thursday. Also advancing to play Thursday was No. 2 seed Lakeville North, who defeated 15th seeded Tri-City United 7-0, and they will play seventh-seeded Farmington, who edged No. 10 seed Winona 4-3. No. 3 seed Lakeville South swept 13th seeded Albert Lea Tuesday by a score of 7-0, and they advance to play No. 6 seed Owatonna, who defeated No. 11 seed Rochester John Marshall Tuesday by a score of 5-2.
