Austin Police investigating catalytic converter theft from a vehicle in the northwest section of the city from Saturday, April 30th

The Austin Police Department is investigating after taking a report of a catalytic converter that was sawed off and stolen from a vehicle in the northwest section of the city Saturday, April 30th.  

Austin Police Captain Todd Clennon stated that the report was taken from the victim at a residence on the 1100 block of 2nd Avenue Southwest.  The vehicle was parked in front of the victim’s residence in the street and when she started the vehicle to leave her home, Captain Clennon stated that she noticed the vehicle was very loud and investigated the cause.  She discovered that the vehicle’s catalytic converter had been sawed off, and the victim then contacted police.  Clennon stated that an investigation revealed the theft had occurred at approximately 4:00 p.m. on the afternoon of Saturday, April 30th.  

Officers canvassed the area and found video of a suspect vehicle.  Captain Clennon indicated that the suspect vehicle was observed in the video stopping next to the victim’s vehicle and an audible sound of sawing could be heard.  Clennon added that the suspect vehicle is believed to be a four-door Mitsubishi Lancer, red or a similar color.

Captain Clennon reported that the theft is the fourth case of a stolen catalytic converter in the city of Austin in the past week. Anyone with information concerning the thefts is asked to contact the Austin Police Department Investigations Unit at 507-437-9400.
