Austin VFW Post #1216 baseball team downs Rochester Panthers 8-1

The Austin VFW Post #1216 baseball team was looking to get back on the winning track at Marcusen Park Thursday evening versus the Rochester Panthers, and it was Sam Oelfke striking out eight while going the distance on the mound, and Austin’s offense providing a lead after one inning that they would not relinquish in an 8-1 win.

Austin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning and that remained the score until the Panthers tallied what would turn out to be their only run of the game in the top of the third to cut Austin’s lead to 3-1.  Post #1216 added some insurance runs and then some in the bottom of the fifth inning when they broke the game open with five runs for the 8-1 final.

Offensively, Austin belted out 11 hits as a team, and they were led by Cooper Napton, who was a perfect 3 for 3, Sam Oelfke and Ethan Anderson were both 2 for 3 with two RBI’s apiece, Landon Meyer went 1 for 3 with a run knocked in, Isaac Nelson drove in two runs in three trips to the plate and Peyton Ransom, Blake Cummings and Isaac Osgood all went 1 for 3.

Oelfke was strong on the mound for Post #1216 Thursday evening as he earned the win by giving up the one run, which was unearned on four hits in seven innings of work, striking out eight and walking two.

With the win, Austin is now 8-5 on the season.
