Fresh off a win versus No. 4 seed Pine Island in the quarterfinals of the Section 1AA West softball tournament, the fifth-seeded Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms were in Zumbrota to take on the top-seeded Cougars of Zumbrota/Mazeppa, and it was the Cougars breaking the game open with a six-run bottom of the fifth inning on their way to a 9-1 win.

The Blossoms tallied a single run on a Shawntee Snyder home run in the top of the first inning for a 1-0 lead, but Zumbrota/Mazeppa pushed three runs across the plate in the bottom of the second to take the lead at 3-1 before breaking the game open with the six-run bottom of the fifth.

Blooming Prairie was held to four hits in the game, as besides Snyder’s home run, right fielder Anna Haberman went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles, and leadoff hitter Macy Lembke picked up the other hit for the Blossoms in the contest.  Pitcher Haven Carlson threw all six innings in the circle for BP and gave up the nine Cougar runs, six earned, on six hits, striking out one and walking five.

With the loss, Blooming Prairie falls to 11-9 on the season, and the Blossoms fall into the elimination bracket for their next game in Pine Island at 5 p.m. Thursday versus either No. 2 seed Cannon Falls, or No. 3 seed Dover/Eyota.
