Blooming Prairie baseball uses six-run third inning to down Schaeffer Academy 11-2

The Blooming Prairie Awesome Blossoms baseball team from the Gopher Conference traveled to Mayo Field in Rochester Monday to take on the Schaeffer Academy Lions out of the Southeast Conference in a non-conference matchup, and freshman centerfield Carter Bishop racked up four hits in five trips to the plate with a RBI and two runs scored, and the Blossoms cracked the game wide open with a six-run top of the third inning on their way to an 11-2 win.

Besides Bishop, freshman catcher Bo Zweiner was 2 for 4 with a run scored, junior first baseman Lucas Schammel was 2 for 4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored as the 3-4-5 hitters for the Blossoms provided eight of the club’s 12 hits for the game.  Sophomore third baseman and shortstop Cale Braaten was 1 for 5 out of the leadoff spot with a double and three runs scored, junior pitcher and shortstop Jesse Cardenas was 1 for 4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored, junior third baseman and leftfielder Micah Donnelly went 1 for 3 with a run knocked in and another scored and junior second baseman Elliot Swenson was 1 for 3 with a RBI for the Blossoms, who scored one in the first, one in the second, six in the third, one in the sixth and two in seventh on their way to the win.

Sophomore pitcher Gabriel Hein earned the win on the mound for Blooming Prairie as he pitched the first five innings and gave up the two Lion runs, both earned, on five hits, striking out five and walking four.  Jesse Cardenas threw the last two innings in relief and gave up no runs on one hit, striking out two and walking none.

With the win, the Blossoms are now 1-8 on the season, and they start a two-game homestand versus Kenyon-Wanamingo in a Gopher Conference matchup this (Tuesday) afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
