After a fundraising scam bilked Ohio residents out of thousands of dollars, police are warning people nationwide to be cautious about who they give money to during the holiday season.

In the Ohio scam, someone has been calling residents of Austintown to raise money for the Austintown Fire Department, police say. However, the Austintown Fire Department is not currently involved in a fundraising drive.

Police say avoiding this type of scam is easy: If you receive a call asking for a donation, simply tell the caller you’ll be happy to donate — after you call the organization yourself, using the published phone number.
