Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team uses big top of the 7th to down Southland 6-3

The Lyle/Pacelli Athletics baseball team was looking to bounce back from Monday’s home non-conference loss to Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman in Adams versus the Southland Rebels in a Southeast Conference matchup, and in a game between the top two teams in the conference, the Athletics rallied back from a 3-2 deficit with four runs in their last at-bat in the top of the 7th for a 6-3 win.

The game was tied at 2 after one inning, and a single run for Southland put the Rebels in front 3-2 heading into the top of the 7th when the Athletics rallied for four runs off releiver Riley Jax.  Hunter VaDeer pitched a scoreless bottom of the 7th to earn the save in relief of starter Mac Nelson, who gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits in six innings of work, walking two and striking out 10.  Rebels starter Harrison Hanna was also tough on the mound in taking a no-decision as he pitched the first 5 1/3 rd innings and gave up two runs, both earned, on seven hits, striking out 12 and walking two.

Offensivley for Lyle/Pacelli, Landon Meyer went 2 for 4 out of the leadoff spot with both hits being doubles, plus he scored a run, Blake Klingfus was also 2 for 4 with two RBI’s and a run scored, Isaac Nelson went 1 for 1 with a double and three RBI’s, Jack Klingfus went 3 for 4 out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order, Mac Nelson was 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored, Hunter Vadeer went 1 for 2 for the Athletics with a run batted in and two more scored and Dane Schara picked up one hit in three officials at-bats.  For Southland, cleanup hitter Travis Kurtz led the way at the plate by going 2 for 3 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored, Gavin Nelson was 1 for 4 with a run scored, Riley Jax went 1 for 1 with a pair of RBI’s and Connor Edland rapped out the other hit in the game for the Rebels, who are now 7-2 in the Southeast Conference and 8-3 overall.

With the win, the Athletics move into first place in the conference by a half-game over the Rebels at 8-2, and they are now 8-4 overall on the season.  Lyle/Pacelli will return to action on Friday in Rochester versus Schaeffer Academy in a Southeast Conference matchup, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m., and Southland will continue a four-game homestand in Adams on Thursday versus Houston in a conference game, with first pitch at 4:30 p.m.
