Professional baseball has been around since 1901, so you’d think the rules for America’s Pastime would be pretty well settled by now.

Not so, though. In order to increase attendance and interest in games, Major League Baseball has announced the following rule changes for the upcoming baseball season.

Rule changes going into effect for all MLB games include:

  • A pitch timer
  • Shift restrictions, requiring two infielders to be on either side of second base
  • Bigger bases, the size of first, second, and third base will be increased to prevent injury
