The Southland Rebels softball team, sitting in first place in the Southeast Conference was looking to get back on the winning track in Houston Tuesday versus the second-place Hurricanes, as a win for the Rebels would clinch their second straight conference title.  The Rebels were able to jump out to an 8-1 lead, and they then held off a late Hurricane rally to win by a score of 8-6.

Southland pushed across single runs in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, and they tallied three more runs in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 5-0.  After Houston scored one run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Rebel lead to 5-1, Southland fired back with what turned out to be three huge insurance runs with one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead.  The Hurricanes would not go quietly on their home field, however, as they put up five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Southland lead to 8-6, but freshman pitcher Laney Weis and the Rebel defense were able to hold the Hurricanes off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out the win.

Offensively for Southland, Clara Timm went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a stolen base, Riana Ulven was 1 for 3 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base, Shannon Kiefer went 1 for 4 for the game with a run knocked in, a run scored and a stolen base, Jaida Sorenson was 1 for 4 with a double, Laney Weis helped her own cause in the circle by going 2 for 3 with a run scored, Grace Krebsbach was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and two stolen bases, Kiley Koenings went 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Abby Sorgatz brought in two runs without the benefit of a hit in the win.

Weis earned the complete-game victory in the pitching circle by giving up the six Houston runs, with only two earned, on seven hits, fanning nine and walking none.

With the win, Southland is now 13-1 in the Southeast Conference and 15-2 overall on the season, and the Rebels will wind up the regular season in Faribault Friday versus Bethlehem Academy in a non-conference matchup, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
