Austin Packers boys tennis team goes 1-1 at season-opening triangular in Owatonna Saturday

The Austin Packers boys tennis team opened their 2024 season with a Big 9 Conference triangular in Owatonna versus the Huskies and the Faribault Falcons, and it was the Packers falling to Owatonna 7-0 before rebounding with a decisive 6-1 win over the Falcons.

In the Owatonna match, a pair of singles players for Austin pushed their matches to three sets, as Cole Hebrink at first singles fell in the first set to Thomas Oien of Owatonna 6-2, but he rebounded to down Oien in the second set by the same 6-2 score before falling 10-6 in the deciding third set.  Nathan Danielson of Austin took the first set at second singles against Joe Zeman of Owatonna 6-4, only to fall by the same score in the second set and 10-8 in the third set.

In their second match versus Faribault, Hebrink outdueled Brandon Petricka at first singles 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3) and 6-3, while Michael Garry was also victorious in three sets at third singles over Nelson Landrau-Ortiz of Faribault 6-2, 4-6 and 6-0.  Lucas Rust of Austin was also a winner in three sets at fourth singles over Adam Diaz-Coons of the Falcons 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4, while Kyler Flanders and Quinton Grimley of the Packers swept Ben Diaz-Coons and Colin Haefs of Faribault 6-4, 6-0.  Samuel Mata and Gavin Matyas of Austin at second doubles over Buay Lua and Miles Leopold of the Falcons 7-5, 7-6 (3), and Marcos Castro and Timothy Perez for the Packers outlasted Mitch Gibbs and Johannes Dull of Faribault at third doubles 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

The Packers open the season with a record of 1-1, and Austin returns to action Tuesday for their home opener at the Wescott Athletic Complex versus Winona in a Big 9 Conference match, with the action scheduled to start at 4:45 p.m.
