The Austin Packers girls basketball team, coming off a second straight 20 or more win season and a runner-up finish in the Section 1AAA tournament last year kicked off the 2023-2024 season in Mankato versus a strong East Cougars squad in a Big 9 Conference matchup Tuesday evening, and in a game where a young Packers squad led 23-22 at the half, the Cougars outscored Austin 26-17 in the second half to win 48-40.

The Packers were led in scoring by veteran guard Ajiem Agwa, who tallied 20 points in the contest, Quinn Osgood scored eight points, freshman guard Addison Walsh tallied seven points, Gracie Arndt and Nora Sand each chipped in two points, and Mackenzie Brede tallied one point in the loss.

Austin opens at 0-1, and the Packers return to action Friday night in Kasson versus the Komets of Kasson/Mantorville in a matchup of Section 1AAA teams, with the varsity tip-off at 7:00 p.m.  The Packers will play their home opener next Tuesday evening versus the Rochester Century Panthers, with the varsity tip-off that evening at 7:30 p.m.
