Overby Orthodontics Prep Athletes of the Week named!

Congratulations to this week’s KAUS Overby Orthodontics Prep Athlete of the Week, Brent Dahl of the Austin Packers boys swimming and diving team, and Sam Winkels of the Austin Packers wrestling team!

Dahl, a sophomore for the Packers was among individuals from the squad who competed at the State Class A Meet at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at the University of Minnesota Thursday, February 29th, Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd, and Dahl, who broke the Austin High School 500 Freestyle record previously held by Logan Kelly from 2021 with a time of 4:47.48 at the Section 1A meet took fifth in the state meet in the event with a time of 4:49.41, breaking his own record, and in the 200 Individual Medley, Dahl took third with a time of 1:57.55.  Dahl was also a part of Austin’s 200 Medley Relay team that finished 14th at the state meet with a time of 1:42.02, and he also swam the anchor leg for the squad’s 400 Freestyle relay team that took 11th with a time of 3:20.55.

Winkels, a junior with the Austin Packers wrestling team competed in the 285 lb. weight class in the State Class AA Individual Wrestling Tournament Friday, March 1st and Saturday, March 2nd at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.

Winkels, who came into the tournament with a record of 45-1 defeated Nathan Klatt from Annandale/Maple Lake in the first round by a 7-4 decision, but he was then pinned in the first round of the winner’s bracket by Brady Rhode of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley at 2:58.   The loss dropped Winkels into the wrestlebacks where he defeated Clayton Danielson of Grand Rapids by a score of 10-4, and he then downed Ian Larrabee of Hibbing by a 9-1 major decision in the second round to advance to meet Evan Thompson, a senior from New Ulm Area, who he defeated by a score of 6-2 to advance to the third place match, where he met Rhode for the second time in the tournament, and it was Rhode winning by a score of 5-0 to claim third place, with Winkels wrestling his way back to a fourth-place finish.

Winkels, who qualified for last year’s State Class AAA Individual Wrestling Tournament at 220 lbs., finishes a fantastic season with a record of 49-1.
