The Southland Rebels softball team was looking to stay in the win column Tuesday as they played host to the GMLOK Bulldogs in a Southeast Conference doubleheader at Rose Creek City Park, and it was the Rebels taking Game 1 13-3 in five innings, and freshman pitcher Laney Weis fired a four-hit shutout in Game 2 to help lead the squad to a 6-0 win.

In Game 1, GMLOK led 1-0 after a half-inning before the heavy-hitting Rebels countered with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead.  After the Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the second to cut the Rebel lead to 4-3, Weis and the Southland defense shut the door the rest of the way, and the Rebel offense countered with one in the bottom of the second, one in the third, and the Rebels then plated seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 10-run rule.

There were hitting heroes aplenty in the game for Southland, as the squad belted out 13 hits in total and were led by Jaida Sorenson, who was 3 for 4 with a double, three RBI’s and a run scored, Riana Ulven went 3 for 3 with two RBI’s and two runs scored, Grace Krebsbach went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI’s and one run scored, Haylee Lowe was 1 for 2 with a run knocked in and two more scored, plus she stole two bases, Clara Timm belted a triple in four trips to the plate with an RBI and two runs scored, and Laney Weis was 2 for 3 for the game with a double and a run scored.

Weis in the circle for Southland gave up the three GMLOK runs, which were all unearned, on three hits, striking out three and walking one.

In Game 2, Clara Timm went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI’s, Laney Weis was 1 for 3 with two RBI’s, plus she fired a four-hit shutout in a 6-0 Rebel win.

Other leading hitters in the game for the Rebels, who were the visiting team on the scoreboard in Game 2 included Riana Ulven, who was 1 for 4 with a double, Abby Sorgatz was 1 for 3 with a run scored, Grace Krebsbach was 1 for 4 in the game with a run scored and a stolen base, Kiley Koenings went 1 for 2 with a run scored, Haylee Lowe went 2 for 4, and Jaida Sorenson went 1 for 4 with a run scored.  Weis in the circle for Southland struck out nine and walked only one in throwing the four-hit shutout.

With the sweep, the Rebels are now 12-1 overall on the season, and the team returns to action Thursday in another Southeast Conference doubleheader, this one versus Mabel-Canton in Rose Creek, with Game 1 set to start at 4:30 p.m.
