Winkels earns 75th career victory as Austin Packers wrestling team competes at South St. Paul Invitational Saturday
The Austin Packers wrestling team competed at the 17-team South St. Paul Veldman Wrestling Invitational Saturday, and junior Captain Samuel Winkels won three more matches, all by fall to take first at Heavyweight. Winkels is now 31-1 on the season with 17 falls and four individual tournament championships, and Winkel’s win the championship match Saturday was the 75th for his career. Winkels now has an overall varsity record of 75 -12 as a Packer.
Senior Tony Garcia also had a great tournament for Austin going 2-1 at 152 pounds and earning a season-best 3rd place finish by defeating Matt Bono of North St. Paul by major decision 12-0.
Austin hosts Albert Lea and Mankato West on Jan. 30th in Packer gym for the squad’s annual PINK out night to raise money for breast cancer research.
