Austin Packers baseball opens 2022 season with 4-2 win over Mankato East

The Austin Packers baseball team, under the tutelage of first year Head Coach Jacob Nelson traveled to Mankato for their season opener Monday versus the East Cougars, the No. 10 ranked team in the state in Class AAA in the first preseason poll, and it was the Packers earning a win for their new coach in his first game at the helm by the score of 4-2.

Nick Robertson got the opening day start for Austin and threw the first four innings, giving up one run and one hit, while striking out four.   The Packers then turned to Sam Oelfke, who pitched the next two innings and also gave up a run and a hit, while striking out four, and Peyton Ransom then came in for the bottom of the 7th and earned the save by striking out the side.
Lathan Wilson led Austin at the plate by going 1 for 1 with two walks, three stolen bases and a run scored, and Peyton Ransom was 1 for 4 with two stolen bases.
The Packers are right back into action tonight in the Big 9 Conference in their home opener against Owatonna at Dick Seltz Field at Riverland Community College, with first pitch at 4:00 p.m.
