Austin Packers boys’ tennis falls to Winona 5-2 Thursday

The Austin Packers boys’ tennis team was on the road Thursday at Winona versus the Winhawks in a Big 9 Conference match that had been postponed from earlier this month due to weather, and it was the Winhawks defending their home court to the tune of a 5-2 victory.

The points in the match for the Packers came from No. 1 singles where Joey Schammel downed Justin Brickner of the Winhawks in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, and Cole Hebrink at No. 2 singles defeated Caleb Ellenburg of Winona in straight sets as well, 6-2, 6-2.  The rest of the matches went to Winona in straight sets, with the exception of No. 4 singles where Owen Carroll of Austin took the first set over Logan Monk of Winona 6-0, but it was Monk rallying back to take the next two sets 6-2 and 6-1 for the victory.

The Packers return to action next Tuesday as they kick off a four-match homestand versus I-90 rival Albert Lea, with the action scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
