The Austin Packers girls’ tennis team opened the 2022-2023 prep sports season for Austin High School at a triangular Tuesday hosted by Rochester John Marshall, and it was the Packers falling to the host Rockets 5-2, and they were also felled by a strong Rochester Mayo squad 7-0.
In the match versus Rochester John Marshall, Gracie Schmitt earned one of Austin’s points at No. 1 singles as she downed Ginny Hull of the Rockets in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, and Katie Van Pelt of the Packers picked up the other point at No. 3 singles as she outlasted Hailey Villar of the Rockets in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 13-11.
Austin returns to action for their home opener Thursday as they will host Faribault and Owatonna in a Big 9 Conference triangular at the Wescott Athletic Complex, with the Packers taking on Owatonna at 12:30 p.m., and Faribault at 4:30 p.m.
